Who We Are

Who we are graphic Who we are graphic

Prevention Research Institute, Inc. (PRI) is a private nonprofit organization committed to helping people reduce the incidence of alcohol and drug-related problems since 1983. We work with dedicated professionals who have partnered with us to affect change in alcohol and drug use throughout the U.S, and with U.S. military personnel stationed throughout much of the world.

Our commitment to partnership with our clients sets us apart from other alcohol and drug prevention and treatment developers. We serve our clients and end-users best by providing extensive support at every level. PRI focuses on alcohol and drug prevention, intervention, pretreatment and treatment. See some of the benefits of adopting Prime For Life® and Prime Solutions®.

Our signature prevention program, Prime For Life®, has been refined over 9 versions through the years based on the most up-to-date scientific research. In 2009 Prime For Life® was added to the National Registry of Effective Programs and Practices (NREPP).This list was reserved for programs that have demonstrated effectiveness through independent scientific evaluation. [Note: NREPP was discontinued by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration in 2018, and has yet to be replaced by a similar system.]

What Makes Us Distinct

We are mission driven, not profit driven. Our vision provides a road map to our destination. Innovation drives us. Our culture reflects our mission and values. Our values define who we are. Our social responsibilities and ethics provide a solid foundation on which we build.

Our Mission

Our mission is simple: to reduce problems related to alcohol and substance use. We strive to inform. We strive to inspire. We strive to promote growth.

Our plans are straightforward. We do this work by:

  • Developing motivational interventions that are research-based and demonstrate measurable effectiveness.
  • Training instructors and counselors.
  • Supporting the persuasive delivery of these programs.
  • Assisting people of different ages to recognize high-risk behavior and make personal lifestyle choices that reduce their own risk.
  • Building partnerships with individuals, organizations, and systems to support low-risk choices over the long term.
  • Researching to gain a measurable understanding of the impact that Prime For Life® and Prime Solutions® has on the end-users.

We are passionate in our belief that the tools to succeed in making low-risk choices should be within reach of everyone, regardless of each person's background, race, gender, sexual orientation, or age. We provide support for a myriad of providers in the majority of the states, including 18 states for impaired driving, and three branches of the U.S. military, the Army, Marines, and Coast Guard.

Our Vision

Our vision unites in a common dream of empowering individuals around the world to make informed low-risk choices about alcohol and drugs that will help them protect all they value and move them toward the life goals they want to achieve.

Our Culture

It's really the people and relationships that make PRI the kind of organization it is. In every aspect of our work, from program research and development, to relationships with our clients, partners, service providers and employees, we strive to play an integral role in helping people lead more fulfilling lives by reducing their risk for alcohol and drug related problems. Everything we do is a reflection of that mission. And, we view our relationship and commitment to our employees with the same passion.

We hire people who are smart, creative, determined, and skilled in their respective fields. Our people are hired, trained, compensated, and promoted without regard to race, religion, color, national origin, age, gender, sexual orientation, marital status, disability, or veteran status.

And when not at work, our employees pursue interests ranging from shoe shopping, reading, knitting, learning, to kayaking, and spending time with their families.

Our Values

Our values define us as individuals and as an organization. They are what we believe, and are at the heart of everything we do.

Growth and Excellence: Growth happens here. We see it in our programs. We see it in our organization. But most importantly, we see it with the people we serve.

Change: Change is constant. Embrace it. We value an environment that is receptive to change and allows for constructive learning.

Respect: We support each other, care for each other, share ideas and don't accept behavior that excludes. It's the foundation of relationships our employees have with each other and with our clients and partners. We respect each other and celebrate our diversity so that everyone can achieve their best. This is essential to our success.

Creativity and Ingenuity: We believe creativity, fresh perspectives, exploration, and new ideas provide the fuel for growth. At all levels, we continue to challenge ourselves to incorporate our vision with creative innovations to develop the best alcohol and drug prevention and treatment programs possible. We dare to ask "why" and "how".

"The best way to predict the future is to invent it."
Allan Kay

Work Hard and Have Fun: We value hard work and are grounded by humor and laughter. We believe positive attitude and enthusiasm create forward thinking and healthy, happy people.

Integrity: We are honest, ethical, and professional with our colleagues, clients, and partners. We make decisions to do the right thing and then act on it.

Clear in non-profit status: We are a private nonprofit organization. This means any profit we make through workbook sales are re-invested back into the organization to further carryout our mission to reduce problems related to alcohol and substance use.

Our Social Responsibilities

At PRI, we believe social responsibility and good business ethics are the foundations upon which we should run our organization. As a result, we have adopted many "best practices" in our efforts to reduce our impact on the environment.

As an organization, we are working hard to shrink our carbon footprint, conserve our resources, and reduce our energy usage.

Our social responsibility commitment: PRI is committed to conducting our business in an ethical and socially responsible manner and contributing positively to the community that supports us.

This is in relation to all aspects of our business and taking into account our employees, our clients, and our vendors. We make every effort to support our community by working with vendors in our local area.

Being Green

"It's not easy being green."
Kermit, the Frog

Recycling: We embrace the idea of environmental protection in what we do. Staff is asked to pay close attention to recycling in an effort to reduce to a minimum any office waste in order to minimize our environmental impact.

Using less paper: PRI's method of documentation means we have little in the way of paper archives. The majority of our business information is now stored electronically. We have drastically decreased our paper consumption by more than 70% by changing the way we communicate with our instructors and counselors in the past several years.

Monthly newsletters such as Prime Notes and Prime Solutions® Notes are delivered electronically to our trained instructors and counselors. Starting the beginning of the year 2013, instructors and counselors began receiving digital copies of Prime Times, PRI's bi-annual newsletters. Digital format allows us to enrich our readers' experience with direct links to videos and podcasts.

Other green efforts include limiting printed materials distributed at trainings, and instead, directing participants to our website and encouraging the use of laptops and tablets during continuing education sessions. Encouraging instructors and counselors to obtain information such as training and resources they need from our website not only reduces paper consumption, but also decreases the impact our activities have on global warming.

conserve iconConserving electricity: Our staff is conscious of turning off lights and powering down their computers and other electronic devices after work hours. We encourage the use of laptop computers among our staff as a means of conserving electricity.

We are proud of our commitment toward a cleaner and greener corporate environment. We look forward to the future and to continued enhancement of our green efforts.

Promoting A Positive Working Environment

We are committed to providing a work environment where employees can feel appreciated, valued, and compensated for commitment and quality work.

We promote and employ based on merits and skill and we do not discriminate based on age, color, ethnicity, or relationship orientation.

We recognize the personal, parental, educational, and family responsibilities of our employees, and ensure that each staff member is properly supported in terms of being able to take leave at short notice when the need arises.

We provide opportunities for all our staff to further develop their skills, with the aim of making PRI an enjoyable and fulfilling place to work.
