Prevention Research Institute, Inc. (PRI) is a private nonprofit organization committed to helping people reduce the incidence of alcohol and drug-related problems since 1983. We work with dedicated professionals who have partnered with us to affect change in alcohol and drug use throughout the U.S., Sweden, and with U.S. Army personnel and Marines stationed throughout much of the world.

Our commitment to partnership with our clients sets us apart from other alcohol and drug prevention and treatment developers. We serve our clients and end-users best by providing extensive support at every level. PRI focuses on alcohol and drug prevention, intervention, pretreatment and treatment. Our signature prevention program, Prime For Life®, has been refined over 9 versions through the years based on the most up-to-date scientific research. The program is listed on the National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices (NREPP).

Our Mission

Our mission is simple: to reduce problems related to alcohol and substance use. We strive to inform. We strive to inspire. We strive to promote growth.

Our plans are straightforward. We do this work by:

  • Developing motivational interventions that are research-based and demonstrate measurable effectiveness.
  • Training instructors and counselors.
  • Supporting the persuasive delivery of these programs.
  • Assisting people of different ages to recognize high-risk behavior and make personal lifestyle choices that reduce their own risk.
  • Building partnerships with individuals, organizations, and systems to support low-risk choices over the long term.
  • Researching to gain a measurable understanding of the impact that Prime For Life® and Prime Solutions® has on the end-users.

We are passionate in our belief that the tools to succeed in making low-risk choices should be within reach of everyone, regardless of each person's background, race, gender, or age.

Clear in non-profit status: We are a private nonprofit organization. This means any profit we make through workbook sales are re-invested back into the organization to further carryout our mission to reduce problems related to alcohol and substance use.

Our Social Responsibilities

At PRI, we believe social responsibility and good business ethics are the foundations upon which we should run our organization. As a result, we have adopted many "best practices" in our efforts to reduce our impact on the environment.

As an organization, we are working hard to shrink our carbon footprint, conserve our resources, and reduce our energy usage.

Our social responsibility commitment: PRI is committed to conducting our business in an ethical and socially responsible manner and contributing positively to the community that supports us.

This is in relation to all aspects of our business and taking into account our employees, our clients, and our vendors. We make every effort to support our community by working with vendors in our local area.

Recycling: We embrace the idea of environmental protection in what we do. Staff is asked to pay close attention to recycling in an effort to reduce to a minimum any office waste in order to minimize our environmental impact.

Using less paper: PRI's method of documentation means we have little in the way of paper archives. The majority of our business information is now stored electronically. We have drastically decreased our paper consumption by more than 70% by changing the way we communicate with our instructors and counselors in the past several years.

Monthly newsletters such as Prime Notes and Prime Solutions® Notes are delivered electronically to our trained instructors and counselors. Starting the beginning of the year 2013, instructors and counselors began receiving digital copies of Prime Times, PRI's bi-annual newsletters. Digital format allows us to enrich our readers' experience with direct links to videos and podcasts.

Other green efforts include limiting printed materials distributed at trainings, and instead, directing participants to our website and encouraging the use of laptops and tablets during continuing education sessions. Encouraging instructors and counselors to obtain information such as training and resources they need from our website not only reduces paper consumption, but also decreases the impact our activities have on global warming.

conserve iconConserving electricity: Our staff is conscious of turning off lights and powering down their computers and other electronic devices after work hours. We encourage the use of laptop computers among our staff as a means of conserving electricity.

We are committed to providing a work environment where employees can feel appreciated, valued, and compensated for commitment and quality work.
